Tsutanuma (Tsuta Marsh) is a remote wetland complex within the Towada-Hachimantai region of Aomori Prefecture, accessible only by foot trail through old-growth beech forest and known for the mirror-like stillness of its surface at dawn. Hasui's morning view from the eastern Japan edition of Nihon fukei shu likely depicts the marsh before wind disturbs its water, mist rising from the surface rendered through pale bokashi gradations applied simultaneously to the sky and water registers—one of the technically demanding aspects of misty dawn compositions. The surrounding beech and oak canopy, whether depicted in deep summer green or autumn gold and rust, would provide the vertical framing against which the horizontal marsh surface reads. The remote northern setting reflects Hasui's practice of traveling to uncommonly depicted natural sites, sketching subjects beyond the established scenic routes of central Honshu. The early-morning hour, a recurring compositional choice in his landscape series, emphasizes solitude and the quality of light before direct sun reaches the water.
