Otaru, on Ishikari Bay in western Hokkaido, was one of the most commercially active ports in northern Japan during the Meiji and Taisho periods, its stone canal warehouses and piers serving the herring fishing industry and trans-Pacific trade. This print from the eastern Japan edition of Nihon fukei shu depicts the harbor pier district, where fishing vessels and cargo boats docked against stone-faced quays. Hasui's harbor compositions typically emphasize the geometric forms of moored vessels—their hull curves and vertical masts—set against an expanse of sea or sky, the horizontal waterline anchoring a composition organized by the rhythm of hulls and rigging. Hokkaido's light, cooler and often cleaner than that of central Honshu, skews toward blue-gray and pale white, a palette well-suited to the multiple blue printing blocks characteristic of his coastal series. Snow on dockside structures, if present, would have been achieved through reserved washi paper tone and karazuri embossing rather than applied white pigment, a technique that preserves the paper's natural warmth within the cold scene.
