Murotsu is a small protected harbor in Suo Province, now southern Yamaguchi Prefecture on the Seto Inland Sea coast, historically significant as a waypoint for maritime trade between Kyushu and the Kinai region. This print from the Nihon fukei shu II Kansai series depicts a coastal village scene characteristic of Hasui's provincial meisho-e: wooden fishing boats moored along a stone quay, hillside structures reflected in the sheltered harbor, and the particular quality of light off the Inland Sea's calm water. Hasui traveled extensively to sketch such lesser-documented harbors, finding in them compositional material—low wooden architecture, reflective water, the geometry of moored vessels—that suited the horizontal format of his oban prints. The Inland Sea light, diffused by maritime haze, would have been rendered through pale blue-gray bokashi across the sky and water registers. The print documents a provincial maritime community seldom depicted in the larger landscape series of the Edo period.
