Soemoncho, adjacent to Dotonbori in central Osaka, served as the city's primary entertainment quarter during the Edo and Meiji periods, its narrow streets lined with theaters, teahouses, and establishments associated with the pleasure quarters. The title's reference to yu (evening or bath) suggests a twilight or nighttime composition, among Hasui's technically most demanding subjects. Nocturnal scenes required precise separation of competing light sources—lantern glow, reflected illumination on wet stone or canal water, and residual blue in the western sky—using blocked-out areas and overlapping pigment passes that would flatten or muddy if misregistered. Hasui's treatment of Osaka's commercial districts as legitimate landscape subjects reflects shin-hanga's expansion beyond the rural and historical places privileged by Edo-period meisho-e. The low wooden facades, overhanging eaves, and paper lanterns of Soemoncho provided a compositional vocabulary of warm and cool tonal contrasts characteristic of his urban night views.
