Description
Dôgashima, on the western coast of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, is characterized by dramatic sea-eroded rock formations, sea caves, and the vivid blue of the Pacific. Hasui's midday (hiru) treatment is atypical for his output, which more often favors dusk, dawn, snow, or rain — conditions that soften light and invite bokashi gradation. A midday composition would demand a high-key palette of brilliant azure water, bleached rock faces, and the hard shadows of direct sunlight, requiring precise registration of multiple color blocks to render the contrast. The Izu coastline was a subject Hasui visited during travel sketching tours, and this print likely appeared in a regional or travel-themed series, documenting the scenic Pacific coast in the shin-hanga tradition.
