Description
Yamanaka Onsen in Ishikawa Prefecture, famous for its hot spring baths and the Kakusenkei gorge, was a subject Hasui depicted in multiple editions. This third identified variant of the Daybreak at Yamanaka composition may differ from its predecessors in color saturation, block wear, or minor compositional adjustments made between print runs. The scene likely shows the Daishōji River gorge at the moment before full sunrise, with pale water catching the first light between steep wooded banks. Dawn in Hasui's mountain gorge prints is typically achieved through a sky graduated from dark blue-grey to a warm luminosity near the horizon, reflecting onto the moving water below. The crisp morning air of the onsen town and the deep green of the gorge's cedar and zelkova trees would be rendered in cool, precise color blocks. As with other multi-edition works, comparison of impressions reveals how Watanabe's workshop maintained and refreshed blocks to meet continued demand for popular compositions.
