Description
Tago no Ura, a shallow bay at the foot of the Izu Peninsula facing Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture, carries deep literary associations: the Man'yôshû poet Yamabe no Akahito immortalized it as a vantage point from which snow-capped Fuji towers above. In this print from the Selected Views of the Tôkaidô Road series, Hasui likely positions the viewer at the water's edge at dusk, with Mt. Fuji visible against a darkening sky and fishermen's boats riding low on the glassy surface. The Tôkaidô series allowed Hasui to revisit sites already laden with historical and poetic weight, interpreting them through the shin-hanga aesthetic of atmospheric light and mood rather than documentary accuracy. Bokashi gradations in the sky and water would have required precise registration across multiple woodblocks.
