Evening in Beppu, from the Souvenirs of Travel, Third Series published in 1929, depicts the geothermally active spa resort town of Beppu on Kyushu's Oita coast at dusk — a town so abundant in hot spring steam that columns of vapor rise from the streets, rooftops, and shoreline, creating an otherworldly atmospheric effect in the evening light. The beppu no yu (Beppu's hot water) subject — capturing the town's constant steam emission as an atmospheric element in the landscape — is among the most distinctive subjects in Hasui's Kyushu documentation, the evening light turning the rising steam columns golden against the darkening Beppu Bay horizon.
