Description
This oban-format shin-hanga depicts a traditional tearoom or chaya positioned at the edge of a still lake under evening rainfall. Hasui renders the rain as diagonal lines of white or pale ink drawn against a deepening sky, a technique requiring precise registration across multiple blocks. The tearoom's paper shoji screens glow with warm interior light, providing the luminous focal point against the darkening water and treeline. Wet surfaces reflect the amber glow, a compositional strategy Hasui employed repeatedly to suggest atmosphere rather than describe it literally. Published by Kawaguchi Shōzaburō's successor firm, this impression represents one of several known printings of the composition, differing from other states in ink gradation and block wear.
