Description
This impression of the lakeside tearoom in evening rain illustrates how Hasui achieved tonal complexity through careful block layering. The composition places the lit interior of the chaya against an expanse of rain-dappled lake water, with distant treeline and overcast sky rendered in graduated washes. The washi support absorbs pigment unevenly across printings, and this state shows the soft bleed characteristic of high-quality handmade paper receiving water-based pigment under baren pressure. Raindrops on the lake surface are indicated by concentric circles of resist or fine-line printing. The image belongs to the category of yoru-kei, or nighttime landscape, a recurring subject throughout Hasui's career.
