Description
The Edo River (Edogawa), which defines the eastern boundary between modern Tokyo and Chiba Prefecture, appears under evening snowfall in this meisho-e print. Hasui's Edogawa compositions typically feature a low, flat landscape — bare willows or reeds lining the embankment, a broad expanse of grey winter sky, and the river's surface rendered in muted blue or grey tones. Snow accumulates on the riverbank vegetation and any structures present, indicated by reserved areas of white washi. The flatness of the Kanto plain surrounding the Edogawa made it a subject suited to wide horizontal compositions with low horizons and expansive sky treatment. This river was familiar to Edo and Tokyo residents as both a geographic boundary and a recreational destination, giving it meisho status within the broader Tokyo landscape.
