Description
This impression of the evening snow at Edo River composition represents a distinct printing state differing from the primary edition in color balance, bokashi depth, or block condition. The Edogawa in winter was a subject Hasui returned to across multiple series, and close comparison of impressions shows variation in the rendering of sky tones, the depth of snow blue shadows, and the crispness of bare tree branches printed from the key block. The composition's horizontal emphasis and muted winter palette required careful pigment preparation and application to achieve the tonal range Hasui designed. Water-based mineral pigments on absorbent washi produce slightly different results with each print run, making the comparison of impressions meaningful for understanding the production history of Hasui's most repeated subjects.
