Description
The Yoshino River in Nara Prefecture, known for its clear waters and the willow-lined banks at Yanagi, furnished Hasui with a subject combining river scenery with the fading tradition of ferry transport. This variant of the composition — a second state or edition — likely shows a flat-bottomed ferry carrying passengers across the river, with long-hanging willow branches (yanagi) framing the upper or lateral edges of the image. The river's surface would be rendered through layered blue and grey gradations, reflecting sky color and the surrounding green or autumnal vegetation. The crossing scene places human figures in proportion to their natural environment, a compositional strategy Hasui used to emphasize the landscape's scale. Comparing this version against its companion print may reveal differences in coloring, sky treatment, or figure placement.
