Description

A second composition in Hasui's treatment of Mount Fuji viewed across a harbor, likely Shimizu or Numazu on Suruga Bay, where the mountain appears with particular clarity across open water. This design may differ from the companion piece in the position of vessels, light conditions, or season—Hasui regularly produced variant designs on the same subject as series prints or revised editions. The harbor setting introduces industrial and commercial elements—fishing boats, breakwaters, or warehouse silhouettes—against which the mountain's symmetrical form appears as a natural counterpoint. Hasui's handling of water in such compositions typically employs horizontal color bands with subtle bokashi transitions, conveying still or lightly rippled surfaces. The mountain's snow cap would be rendered with the reserved palette characteristic of his Fuji prints. Published by Watanabe Shozaburo in the shin-hanga tradition, the print reflects the movement's broader project of reconnecting Japanese viewers with iconic national landscapes.
