Description
The first in a series of prints associated with Fuji-Hakone National Park (国立富士箱根), Japan's second designated national park, established in 1936. These prints were produced in the context of a broader Showa-era effort to document and promote Japan's protected landscapes through the accessible medium of woodblock printing. Hasui's composition likely presents one of the park's signature views—Mount Fuji across Lake Kawaguchi, the volcanic caldera of Owakudani, or the reed-edged shores of Lake Ashi—rendered with his characteristic atmospheric sensitivity. The shin-hanga technique's capacity for nuanced bokashi gradations suited these panoramic subjects well, conveying atmospheric haze, volcanic steam, or the mist that frequently obscures high-altitude landscapes in this region. The bilingual title structure, with Japanese characters identifying the park, reflects the print's dual audience of domestic viewers and foreign tourists who purchased shin-hanga as refined souvenirs of Japan.
