Description
One of a group of small-format yotsugiri prints depicting Mount Fuji, the term yotsugiri denoting a sheet printed at one-quarter the standard oban size. This compact format was used for affordable, collectible prints and required Hasui to distill composition to its essentials. The third design in this group likely presents Fuji from a distinct vantage—perhaps a winter view emphasizing the snow cap against a spare sky, or a distant silhouette across water. Despite the reduced scale, Hasui's technique remains precise: graduated bokashi washes render atmospheric depth, and the characteristic Watanabe Shozaburo imprint attests to careful production standards. Yotsugiri prints were popular souvenirs and demonstrate that Hasui brought the same compositional rigor to small-format work as to full-size landscape series. The vertical or horizontal orientation of this design would further distinguish it from its companion pieces.
