Description
Fukuroda Falls (袋田の滝) in Ibaraki Prefecture is among Japan's three most celebrated waterfalls, cascading in four successive drops across a broad basalt face. Hasui visited Fukuroda in autumn, when the surrounding deciduous forest turns vermillion and gold — colors that contrast sharply with the white torrent of falling water. The composition likely frames the falls frontally within steep gorge walls, foregrounding the spray and mist at the base while the upper drop recedes into foliage. Autumn meisho-e of this type required the printer to manage a demanding palette: warm reds and oranges for the maples, cool greys and whites for the water, and deep shadow tones for the rock face, each requiring separate carved blocks and precise registration on handmade washi.
