Description
The fourth impression in this group of Futago Island moonlight printings shares the same carved key block as the other variants, depicting the paired rocky outcroppings of the island rising from Matsushima Bay beneath a night sky. Hasui's design takes the classic meisho-e subject of the three scenic views of Japan and transforms it through nocturnal lighting into a quieter, more introspective image than the conventional daytime panoramas of the Edo period. The printing technique draws on the full range of the workshop's bokashi capacity: the sky transitions through several tonal values, the water surface is rendered with a separate gradation pass, and the pine foliage is built from layered dark blocks. The horizontal serenity of the bay and the vertical thrust of the island pines establish the compositional poles of the design.
