Description

The Futatsudo at Rinnoji Temple in Nikko was one of the sites Hasui returned to most consistently across his career, producing multiple woodblock prints under the title 日光二ツ堂. This version likely represents a definitive or early treatment of the subject, perhaps the composition that established the visual template subsequent versions elaborated. The two ancient halls—wooden structures dating to the Heian and Kamakura periods and reconstructed under Tokugawa patronage—stand in a forest clearing within the broader Nikko sacred precinct. Hasui's approach to the site emphasized atmospheric presence over architectural documentation: the halls are understood as part of their forested setting rather than as isolated monuments. Graded ink application in the sky zone and careful differentiation of the foliage masses through varied greens demonstrate the collaborative atelier process between Hasui's design and Watanabe's carvers and printers.
