Description
This state of the Gion Bridge, Asakusa composition is among the earlier or contemporaneous variants Hasui produced of this subject. The bridge sits within the culturally dense landscape of Asakusa, near the Senso-ji temple complex, where waterways and pedestrian bridges formed natural compositional subjects for shin-hanga meisho-e. Hasui's characteristic handling of reflected light on water surfaces — achieved through careful registration of multiple blocks — would be central to the print's visual effect. The numbered suffix distinguishes this impression from related states, possibly indicating a different printer or publisher, an altered sky treatment, or a change in the season implied by surrounding tree forms and ground color. Such variant series demonstrate the collaborative, workshop-based nature of shin-hanga production.
