Description

A long wooden bridge on wooden pilings curves diagonally across the upper portion of the composition, rendered in pale tan tones against a dark band of sky, with a single dark-robed figure walking across it in the distance. Below, a child in a blue polka-dot robe, red trousers, and a white cap stands barefoot on the rocky, tide-exposed riverbed, holding a bundle of greens and facing three white ducks or geese swimming near the water's edge. The palette is dominated by soft blues and grays in the shallow water and wet rocks, with a Japanese inscription and red seal at lower left; "Gionbashi, Amakusa," woodblock print by Kawase Hasui, 1924.
