Description

This print depicts the Kotoku-in Great Buddha at Kamakura, the seated outdoor bronze Amida Buddha cast in the thirteenth century and among the most recognizable monuments of medieval Japan. Hasui's composition likely presents the colossal figure from a low frontal or three-quarter angle, surrounded by the forested hillside of Kamakura's valley. The figure's smooth bronze surfaces would be rendered in warm grey-brown tones, while the surrounding vegetation provides seasonal or atmospheric context — perhaps rain-darkened foliage or pale autumn color. Hasui treated religious architecture and monuments as landscape elements, integrating them into compositions where weather, light, and natural setting are as important as the subject itself. This variant may differ from related impressions in the treatment of sky, foliage color, or the presence of rain or mist. Printed in the shin-hanga tradition on washi with multiple color blocks.
