Description
Hinuma is a large shallow lake near Mito in Ibaraki Prefecture, and Hiroura identifies a bay or lagoon area along the lake's margin. The lake and surrounding wetlands historically supported fishing communities whose boats, nets, and shore structures provided Hasui with the compositional foreground elements typical of his lake subjects. The flat topography of the Kanto Plain places Hinuma's horizon low, allowing a wide expanse of sky above the water's surface — a spatial arrangement that Hasui exploited throughout his lakeside and coastal work. This print may depict the scene at dawn or dusk, when the still surface of a shallow lake mirrors the sky's transitional tones. The reed beds bordering Hinuma were rendered through fine parallel lines carved from narrow-tipped blocks, pressed onto washi to suggest the vertical texture of wetland vegetation. The print documents a working landscape on the Kashima coast that was central to Ibaraki's traditional fishing economy.
