Description
The Oga Peninsula, projecting into the Sea of Japan from Akita Prefecture in northern Honshu, presents a dramatic coastline of volcanic rock formations and sea caves carved by wave action over centuries. This print depicts one of the peninsula's notable sea grottos, known as Kōjaku-dō, where the rock walls funnel incoming swells into enclosed chambers. Hasui traveled extensively in northern Japan, and the rugged coastlines of Tōhoku provided subjects distinct from the refined temple and lake scenery of Kyoto or the urban topography of Tokyo. The composition likely presents the cavern opening from inside or at close range, with dark rock walls framing a view of open sea or turbulent surf. The deep blacks required for cave wall shadows would have demanded dense ink application in multiple keyblock impressions.
