Kanda Myojin Shrine Precent, from the series "Twenty Views of Tokyo" (Tokyo nijukei, Kanda Myojin keidai)
by Kawase Hasui

by Kawase Hasui
From the Twenty Views of Tokyo series (1925–1930) — Hasui's most prestigious documented series and the foundation of serious collecting. These prints document interwar Tokyo neighborhoods with extraordinary atmospheric sensitivity. Christie's is the most active auction house for this series, having handled 533+ Hasui lots. Series membership adds a consistent premium over standalone compositions of comparable subjects. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
Kanda Myojin Shrine Precinct, from the Twenty Views of Tokyo series published in 1926, depicts the Kanda Myojin shrine in the Kanda district of central Tokyo — one of the capital's most important shrines, dedicated to the pre-Tokugawa lords of Edo and famous for the Kanda Matsuri festival alternating with Sanno Matsuri as one of the three great Edo festivals. The shrine's elevated position on Kanda Hill, with its bright vermillion main hall and surrounding sacred grove, gave Hasui a subject combining the ancient sacred landscape with the surrounding commercial and educational neighborhood below. The bokashi sky gives the composition its atmospheric depth.
