Description
This meisho-e landscape likely depicts Kawarahata, a rural location rendered with the tonal restraint characteristic of Hasui's shin-hanga work. The title suggests a riverbank or field setting, subjects Hasui returned to repeatedly as he documented quieter corners of the Japanese countryside beyond famous tourist landmarks. His treatment of such scenes typically employs a close horizon line and deliberate atmospheric gradation — bokashi applied to the sky and water to evoke particular light conditions, whether dawn, dusk, or overcast midday. The Watanabe Shozaburo publishing house's skilled woodblock craftsmen would have translated Hasui's watercolor sketch into carved keyblock and color blocks on washi paper, achieving the soft transitions between tones that defined the shin-hanga aesthetic. Figures or boats, if present, serve as compositional anchors rather than narrative focal points, locating the viewer within a specific season and hour rather than telling a story.
