Description
The Kiso River at Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture, was a location Hasui depicted repeatedly, likely because the site offered several painterly elements in close proximity: the river's broad, slow-moving current, the dense cedar and pine forest on the opposite bank, and the white castle keep of Inuyama-jo visible on the ridge above. In this version, the composition may emphasize the reflective quality of the water at a particular hour, with cool blues and dark greens rendered through careful pigment layering on washi. The Kiso River, historically significant as a commercial waterway between Nagoya and the mountains, appears tranquil in Hasui's treatment — the economic life of the river suppressed in favor of pure landscape contemplation.
