Description
Among the Kiso River at Inuyama compositions bearing the Japanese title 木曽川, this print likely shares the same general viewpoint as its companions but varies in color temperature or compositional detail. Hasui sometimes shifted the horizon line, altered the ratio of water to sky, or included a small boat or fisherman to provide scale against the broad river. The Kiso River in Aichi Prefecture, downstream of the densely forested Kiso Valley, runs wide and relatively calm near Inuyama, which suited Hasui's preference for reflective water surfaces as compositional elements. The castle on the bluff — Inuyama-jo, one of Japan's few surviving original tenshu keeps — appears as a white accent above dark treeline in most of these views.
