Description
This version of the Kiso River at Inuyama (木曽川) likely represents a different time of day or season from its companion prints. Hasui's interest in the Inuyama site lay partly in how the reflective surface of the river changed character depending on cloud cover, season, and the angle of light on the opposite forest. If an evening or twilight composition, the sky would be rendered in layered pinks and grays using bokashi application, with the dark silhouette of the trees and castle providing tonal contrast. The washi ground absorbs pigment differently across a sheet, and skilled printers exploited this variation to create the luminous, slightly uneven surface texture that distinguishes hand-printed shin-hanga from mechanical reproduction.
