Description
This print of the Kiso River (木曽川) at Inuyama belongs to a group of closely related compositions in which Hasui explored different framings and atmospheric conditions along the same stretch of river below Inuyama Castle. The Japanese title confirms the subject as the Kisogawa, the major river of Nagano and Aichi prefectures. A common compositional choice for Hasui here is a low riverbank vantage, with the water filling the lower half of the sheet and the dense forested ridge — topped at its far end by the white tower of Inuyama Castle — occupying the upper register. Graduated bokashi in the sky would shift from pale near the horizon to deeper blue-gray above, anchoring the scene in a specific quality of light.
