Description

This second version of Hasui's Kujukushima, Shimabara composition represents a distinct impression state or edition of the same woodblock design. In shin-hanga practice, publishers occasionally issued revised impressions of the same composition with adjusted color values—alterations in the key block ink, the blending of sky gradations, or changes to secondary color blocks—that could meaningfully shift the visual character of a print while leaving the fundamental composition unchanged. The Kujukushima subject depicts the island-dotted waters near Sasebo in Nagasaki Prefecture, a coastal landscape defined by the silhouetted profiles of small pine-covered islands against water and sky. The Shimabara Peninsula nearby provides the broader geographic context of northwestern Kyushu's complex, bay-indented coastline. Comparison between this version and the primary impression may reveal differences in atmospheric tone, the treatment of water surface color, or the relative weight of the sky gradation—variations characteristic of the run-by-run variability inherent in hand woodblock printing.
