Description
This second treatment of Lake Chuzenji at Nikko likely approaches the subject from a different vantage point or season than the first. The lake's wooded shoreline, backed by the volcanic profile of Mount Nantai, presented Hasui with a subject well suited to the full color range of shin-hanga printing: the deep evergreen of cedar and fir, the seasonal deciduous color, the blue-grey of mountain water, and the receding planes of the surrounding hills. The Nikko region's status as a major pilgrimage destination and tourist site from the Edo period onward gave Hasui's treatments of the area immediate commercial appeal, while his atmospheric approach distinguished them from the more diagrammatic views found in earlier woodblock travel imagery.
