Description
This third Lake Chuzenji composition likely represents Hasui's continued exploration of the site under different atmospheric conditions from his earlier treatments. The Nikko mountain lake, set within national park territory that had attracted visitors since the construction of foreign diplomatic residences along its shore in the Meiji period, offered Hasui a subject that combined natural grandeur with the quietude he preferred to crowded urban scenes. The print may emphasize the lake in autumn, when the maple and birch stands along the shoreline reached their peak color, a subject that demanded the full palette of Hasui's printer's color range — deep carmine, ochre, and persimmon tones against the grey-blue of the water surface.
