Description
Among Hasui's several Lake Chuzenji compositions, this fourth version demonstrates how he extracted distinct pictorial possibilities from a single geographic subject through variations in season, light, and compositional framing. The high-altitude lake's shoreline offers foreground interest in the form of overhanging branches, moored boats, or exposed rocky banks depending on the season, while the far shore and mountain background provide the middle and deep distance that structured his landscape compositions. The bokashi gradation technique applied to water and sky in the lower and upper registers of the print would have required careful printing by master craftsmen at Watanabe's atelier, with the washi paper dampened before pressing to allow the pigment to bleed at the edges of each tone band.
