by Kawase Hasui
The Souvenirs of Travel series (First, Second, and Third Series, 1919–1922) represents Hasui's earliest major publishing relationship with Watanabe Shozaburo. Pre-earthquake impressions (before September 1923) are the rarest — the Kanto Earthquake destroyed Watanabe's workshop and most original blocks, making surviving early round-seal impressions exceptionally valuable at $2,500–$8,000. Post-earthquake editions were printed from recut blocks and trade at lower prices.
Lake Hachirogata in Akita, from the Souvenirs of Travel, Third Series published in 1927, depicts the former shallow lagoon lake of Hachirogata in the Akita coastal plain — at the time Japan's second-largest lake, bounded by low earthworks and stretching across the flat agricultural landscape north of Akita city. The lake's extraordinary flatness and openness (later drained for agriculture in the postwar period) gave Hasui an unusually horizontal composition of still water, low reeds, and wide sky. The Rivers & Lakes and Bokashi tags indicate the atmospheric treatment appropriate to this vast, flat water subject.
