Description

Lake Kawaguchi (Kawaguchi-ko) at dawn or early morning presented Hasui with the atmospheric conditions he pursued throughout his career: still water, graduated sky, and the slow resolution of landscape forms from shadow into light. This print likely shows the lake in calm, clear weather with Mount Fuji rising to the south, its lower slopes partially concealed by morning mist and its summit catching first light. The eastern shore of Kawaguchi-ko offered views that placed the mountain across the full width of the lake, enabling the characteristic compositional doubling of Fuji and its reflection. Hasui's printers achieved the sky's tonal transitions through multiple applications of the sky block with progressively lighter ink, creating soft bokashi bands without mechanical abruptness. The near shore may feature sparse pines, low scrub, or a simple fishing dock, providing a human-scaled reference against the mountain's mass. Kawaguchi-ko's role as a primary Fuji viewpoint made it a recurring subject across Hasui's catalog, and this composition represents one approach to a site he documented across different publication campaigns over several decades.
