Description

This version of Lake Kawaguchi (Kawaguchi-ko) may present the lake under evening light or at dusk, a time of day that interested Hasui for the chromatic complexity it introduced to reflective water surfaces. The western sky in evening compositions turns through registers of orange, amber, and deep rose, while the mountain silhouette darkens against the backlit horizon. The lake's surface mirrors this sky transformation, producing a second image of the mountain and sky in the lower half of the composition. Hasui and his Watanabe workshop printers achieved evening transitions through careful bokashi gradation across multiple sky blocks, sometimes using three or four registered applications to produce the full tonal range from orange near the horizon to deep blue-grey at the top. Mount Fuji rendered in silhouette differs formally from the mountain under direct or oblique light: the outline becomes a flat shape rather than a modeled volume, giving the composition a graphic clarity distinct from midday views. A low boat on the water or a single figure on the shore may anchor the foreground and establish human scale.
