Description

Lake Kawaguchi (Kawaguchi-ko) under moonlight offered Hasui a subject that combined the lake's reflecting surface with the tonal range of his nocturnal compositions. A moonlit Kawaguchi-ko print would feature the lake's surface in deep indigo, the mountain's outline visible against a lighter zone of sky near the southern horizon. The moon — whether full, crescent, or implied by off-frame light — would be reflected in a column of pale brightness across the water toward the viewer. Hasui's nocturnal compositions relied on the printer's skill in building deep, even indigo or blue-black across large sky blocks without streaking, a technically demanding task when printing on absorbent washi. Shore vegetation — pine silhouettes or bare winter branches — would appear as dark masses against the luminous sky, established through careful carving of the key block outline rather than interior modeling. The tonal contrast between the lit sky band near the horizon and the dark surrounding water produces the characteristic luminous quality of Hasui's night prints, a quality that distinguished his nocturnal work within the shin-hanga tradition.
