Description

This print represents Hasui's primary composition of Lake Matsubara in Shinshu at morning, likely the first or canonical edition from which subsequent variants derive. Lake Matsubara, located near Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture at the base of the active volcano Mount Asama, offered Hasui a landscape combining still water, evergreen shoreline, and dramatic mountain backdrop. Morning light conditions allowed him to employ the graduated bokashi technique across the sky and water simultaneously, creating a symmetrical tonal structure across the print's upper and lower halves. The washi paper absorbs the thin, layered pigments characteristic of shin-hanga production, giving the sky transitions a softness not achievable in earlier meiji-period prints. Hasui traveled extensively throughout Japan sketching landscapes on location before returning to his studio to develop finished designs, and the Shinshu lake series reflects the careful observational practice underlying his seemingly effortless compositions. The oban-format sheet is typical of his Tokaido and landscape series work.
