Description
A second printing state of Hasui's Lake Shoji composition, this variant shares the fundamental design of its companion prints while potentially differing in color temperature, sky gradation, or seasonal emphasis. Lake Shoji's small size and the dramatic presence of Mount Fuji above its southern shore made it a compositionally concentrated subject, with the mountain dominating the upper half of the print and the glassy lake surface occupying the lower half. The intermediate zone of forested shoreline provides the only complex texture in an otherwise spare composition. In this edition, the relationship between warm and cool tones in the sky and water will reveal the time of day Hasui intended — early morning prints tend toward cool blues and pale grays, while midday or late afternoon versions employ more saturated blues or yellowed light. The bokashi technique applied across the sky block required precise registration between the key block and color blocks, and slight variations in registration across impressions contribute to the distinctive character of each numbered variant.
