Description

Matsue sits on the shores of Lake Shinji in Shimane Prefecture, a castle town known for its well-preserved Edo-period streetscape and watery landscape. The title Kohan no ame—lakeside rain—signals a characteristic Hasui atmospheric subject: the surface of the lake disrupted by rainfall, the shore and architecture dissolved in grey and silver tones. Rain scenes demanded particular technical precision from Hasui's block-cutters at Watanabe's workshop; diagonal rain lines were cut with fine chisels across inked surfaces and printed over the underlying color fields. Bokashi gradations along the sky and water heighten the sense of atmospheric wetness. Hasui often rendered rain at dusk or at night, when the contrast between lit interiors and the darkened lake would intensify the mood. Matsue's famous Ohashi Bridge or lakeshore boat landings may anchor the composition, providing human-scale reference against the expansive grey water. The print belongs to the tradition of Japanese landscape imagery that treats inclement weather not as a deficiency but as a defining aesthetic condition.
