Description

Matsushima Bay in Miyagi Prefecture, long ranked among the Nihon Sankei — the three canonical views of Japan — presented Hasui with one of the country's most celebrated landscape subjects. The bay contains approximately 260 pine-covered rocky islands of varying sizes, creating a layered compositional field that suited his meisho-e approach. This print likely frames several of the smaller islands at close or middle range, their wind-shaped pines silhouetted against sky or water. The irregular forms of the islands allowed Hasui to use his keyblock contour lines expressively, while the water surrounding them gave the printing team space to execute the graduated blue-gray bokashi gradations that characterize his mature work. Pine trees in Japanese landscape tradition carry connotations of longevity and resilience, adding symbolic depth to what is also straightforwardly a response to a spectacular natural setting.
