Description

Published as part of the Tabi miyage dai isshu (Souvenirs of Travel, First Series), this early Hasui design documents his travels through northern Japan undertaken with the support of publisher Watanabe Shozaburo. Katsurashima is one of the named islands in Matsushima Bay, and viewing the broader bay from this specific vantage point frames the scene with a particular compositional logic — the island's trees or shoreline forming a near-ground element against the receding line of other islands. The Tabi miyage series, begun around 1919, established Hasui's reputation as a landscape specialist and set the formal vocabulary he would refine throughout his career: high-horizon compositions, atmospheric sky gradations, and a preference for liminal times of day. These early prints were produced in limited quantities on high-quality washi and are among his most sought-after designs.
