Description
Mishima River in Mutsu, published in Summer 1919, depicts a river in the Mutsu region (present-day Aomori Prefecture) — one of Hasui's earliest travel prints from the northern Tohoku, capturing the clean, fast-flowing streams that characterize the rivers descending from the Ou mountains to the Pacific coast. The 1919 date places this among the career-opening landscapes Hasui was producing as he began systematic travel through Japan's regions, and the summer setting suggests the river in full flow, its banks green with the season's lush vegetation.
