Description

The Ara River (Arakawa) at Akabane in northern Tokyo provides an urban-adjacent riverscape setting characteristic of Hasui's Tokyo series, distinct from his rural landscape subjects. Akabane, where the Arakawa meets several smaller waterways before entering Tokyo Bay's drainage system, offered broad riverbanks, wooden footbridges, and views across flat water toward distant urban or agricultural landforms. Under moonlight, the flat river surface would dominate the lower portion of the composition, with bokashi treatment of reflections creating pale bands across dark water. The human scale of this subject — perhaps a fishing boat drawn up on the bank, or a lone figure on a bridge — contrasts with the vast sky and water proportions typical of Hasui's river compositions. The Akabane setting connects this print to Hasui's extended documentation of Tokyo's waterway landscapes during the Taisho and early Showa periods.
