Getsumei no Kamoko [Sado]
by Kawase Hasui
A nocturnal water scene — one of Hasui's most technically sophisticated subjects, requiring the master printing of both moonlight effects and water reflections simultaneously. Gallery retail for Moon at Magome (a comparable night-water scene) is listed at $15,000 by Egenolf Gallery. Moonlight over Kanazawa Canal (postwar, 1950) sold for $2,300 at Bonhams London (2022) even in a later edition — earlier impressions command substantially more. Pre-earthquake impressions (before September 1923) are the rarest of all, as the Kanto Earthquake destroyed Watanabe's workshop and most early blocks.
Moonlight over Lake Kamo in Sado Island, published in 1921 as part of the Souvenirs of Travel, Second Series, depicts the brackish lagoon lake on Sado Island's Kamo district under full nocturnal illumination. Lake Kamo, separated from the sea by a narrow sandbar, was a celebrated scenic site on the island — its still, sheltered surface caught moonlight with exceptional clarity. The [oban](/glossary/oban) format, [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) sky, and moonlight reflection on calm water make this one of the Second Series' most accomplished night-scene compositions, demonstrating Hasui's rapid mastery of the nocturnal atmospheric effects that would become among his most celebrated specialties.
