Description
Hasui recorded the Dōtonbori waterfront in Osaka across several compositions and series, and this print belongs to that body of work depicting the canal district's morning character. Before Osaka's postwar reconstruction, Dōtonbori's southern bank was defined by the large-gabled fronts of the Gōza and Kado theatres, which Hasui would have sketched on location during his travels. The morning hour strips away the nighttime spectacle and renders the scene in the muted, contemplative palette that distinguishes his landscape work. Reflected building forms in the canal water, pale sky graduated through bokashi, and the stillness of the early hour are characteristic compositional features. Printed on washi through the shin-hanga workshop process.
