Description

Tsuchiura, a castle town on the southwestern shore of Lake Kasumigaura in Ibaraki Prefecture, provided Hasui with the wide, flat water views that frequently anchored his most atmospheric compositions. Lake Kasumigaura — the second-largest lake in Japan — is known for its expansive, low horizons and the soft morning light that plays across its surface, conditions well suited to Hasui's interest in atmospheric effect over topographical description. A morning print of Tsuchiura would likely show boats at anchor in the shallow harbor, a low treeline or castle embankment in the distance, and a broad sky rendered through the horizontal bokashi gradations characteristic of the Watanabe workshop. The flat landscape of the Kanto plain's eastern margins allowed Hasui to distribute tonal weight across a wide horizon rather than building vertically, a compositional approach that imparts a quality of open stillness. The print belongs to Hasui's extensive documentation of provincial lakeside and riverine towns across central Japan.
