Description
This print depicting Mount Fuji from Funatsu in Yamanashi is among the earlier states of Hasui's treatment of this lakeside vantage point. Funatsu sits on Lake Kawaguchi's northern bank, where Fuji rises almost symmetrically above the treeline without the visual obstruction of intervening ridges. Hasui's composition in this area typically draws the eye across flat water or open agricultural land before arriving at the mountain's broad base and deeply incised glacial couloirs. The color register tends toward cool grays and slate blues in the sky, contrasting with the ochre or pale green of the foreground terrain. Such Fuji compositions were central to the Tokaido and Thirty-six Views series he produced for Watanabe throughout the Taisho and early Showa periods.
