Description

Published by Watanabe Shozaburo as part of the inaugural series Tabi miyage dai isshu (Souvenirs of Travel, First Series) in 1919, this print depicts temple architecture set within forested hillside terrain outside Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture. The composition positions one or more wooden temple structures among dense cryptomeria or pine, using the vertical rhythm of tree trunks to frame the built forms. Hasui traveled extensively to sketch subjects from life, and the Sendai area supplied several designs for this early series. Characteristic shin-hanga printing techniques are evident in the nuanced gradation of the sky through horizontal bokashi passes and in the layered greens of the surrounding foliage. The Tabi miyage series represents Hasui's formative published work and is among the most sought-after of his early designs among collectors.
